Brooke Shields: Spotlight on This Year’s Luncheon Speaker

The Atlanta Women’s Foundation (AWF) is thrilled to welcome Brooke Shields — an esteemed actress, model, author, and advocate for women — as the speaker for our 2023 Numbers Too Big to Ignore Luncheon. The renowned Brooke Shields is known for her extensive career in the entertainment and fashion sectors and her passionate advocacy work. Her unwavering commitment to empowering women positions her as a symbol of hope and a role model for many worldwide.

Having lived in the spotlight from an early age, Brooke Shields became America’s Sweetheart at the tender age of 14. Yet, this fame did not shield her from the trials and insecurities many females encounter. Shields has spoken in depth about her professional career and public life experiences, including growing up with an alcoholic parent and her own journey through motherhood.

Attendees will find her narrative echoes their own life experiences as she speaks of the mental and emotional grit required to lead a fulfilling life. Her openness about her life’s highs and lows creates a deep connection with audiences, making her a much-anticipated speaker for the occasion.

In 2021, Brooke founded the community called Beginning Is Now, dedicated to enabling women of all age groups to support one another and live life to the fullest. The following year, in 2022, Brooke started her own podcast series with iHeart titled “Now What? with Brooke Shields,” where she explored life transitions, failures, and overcoming life’s obstacles. Additionally, Brooke contributes to a nonprofit organization, WIN, focused on assisting homeless women and children in New York City. Her contributions and community involvement across these diverse platforms have triggered waves of positive change, inspiring women to advocate for themselves and their communities.

In her recent documentary “Pretty Baby,” Brooke addresses concerns about the sexualization of young girls, sharing her own narrative and determination to improve conditions for women and girls. This film has ignited significant discussions, showing the need for changes in societal norms.

Brooke recently revealed her upcoming book project, co-authored with Rachel Bertsche. This book explores the narratives of middle-aged women, aiming to reshape the perception of aging as a phase of exploration and opportunity. The announcement has stirred excitement, highlighting the audience’s enthusiasm for the insightful discussion and empowerment Brooke and her co-author are set to offer.

“We are thrilled to have Ms. Shields as our featured speaker this year,” says Kari B. Love, CEO of AWF. “Her story of overcoming challenges both personally and professionally is truly inspiring. Furthermore, her work as the founder and CEO of Beginning Is Now — a global community of women of all ages finding strength, wisdom, optimism, humor, and so much more in each other, all while learning to live their fullest lives — is right in line with AWF’s mission.”

With a legacy of over 25 years, the Atlanta Women’s Foundation continues to uplift women and girls in Atlanta. The Numbers Too Big to Ignore Luncheon serves as a catalyst for addressing and devising solutions to challenges faced by impoverished women and girls in Atlanta. It also backs the “All Girls Forward” initiative, aimed at supporting girls through education, healthcare, and early pregnancy prevention, embodying AWF’s dedication to nurturing a brighter future for the local female community.
