Mental Health & Wellbeing Initiative
The Mental Health & Wellbeing Initiative is AWF’s five-year, research-driven grantmaking initiative dedicated to improving mental health outcomes for women and girls across metro Atlanta. By investing in trusted community organizations, AWF is expanding access to culturally responsive care while addressing the interconnected challenges — including housing instability, financial stress, caregiving responsibilities, trauma, and limited healthcare access — that shape mental health and wellbeing.
FROM RESEARCH TO ACTION
In 2026, AWF released new research examining the mental health challenges facing women and girls across metro Atlanta. The findings revealed that mental health cannot be addressed in isolation: emotional wellbeing is deeply connected to economic security, safe housing, caregiving support, healthcare access, and social connection.
In response, AWF created the Mental Health & Wellbeing Initiative to invest in integrated, community-based solutions that address both immediate mental health needs and the underlying conditions affecting wellbeing.
What We Fund
- Counseling and behavioral health services
- Trauma-informed care and peer support
- Primary and mental healthcare for uninsured women
- Housing stabilization and family support
- Workforce development and financial wellbeing
- Culturally responsive community wellness programs
- Integrated services that address multiple needs in one trusted setting
2026-2027 Investment Snapshot
- $500,000 invested annually in seven nonprofit organizations
- $2.5 million planned investment over five years
- Approximately 3,000 women, girls, and children are projected to receive direct services annually
- Up to 5,000 individuals reached through referrals and family engagement
- Services provided across Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties
- Priority placed on underserved communities, including Clayton County and South Metro Atlanta
